Fountain Head Musings

I have always wanted to read Fountain Head by Ayn Rand. This was because my friends who read it have given immense reviews and also the book had changed one of my friend’s lives. I never understood how a book could impact a person in such a way. And yesterday when my roommate started reading the book and had not completed more than 50 pages when he looked up and me and started this conversation

King: I don’t know why I still work with the current company.

Me: Why do you say so?

King: I am the best in what I do and I am better than all my managers.

Me: We all are. At least we think so.

King: Seriously. I complete my work way ahead of my peers and ahead of the deadline set by my boss. It is now come to a level where my boss is not able to cope up with me to give me more work to keep me occupied.

I wondered. How did it dawn on him? He has been working for the past 2 ½ years. He must have known all of this earlier. Did the book just make him erupt all that he had had in his mind or is it putting in new thoughts into his intellect. I am seriously confused.

I have heard of and read about people who influence others minds, but this is the first time I have seen it happening. For this factor I admire Ayn Rand. But now the other thought wave smashing into the beaches of my brain are whether I should read the book. I am known for being influenced by people for all small things. I am working on breaking this character of mine and have been half successful in the past 2 years. Will reading Fountain Head help me conquer the other half way I intend to go or will it shift my gear to reverse. This again confuses me.

If the thought of reading the book confuses me by itself, reading the book will definitely clobber my mind. So the objective to be completed before I start reading the book is to reach the destination where I am no more influenced by people who are selfish to attain their goal no matter what sacrificing others wishes.

MID-NIGHT CHIT CHAT

Every night I fight to go to sleep. It takes me normally 15 to 30 minutes before I doze off. What should I do to amuse myself in this time?

I bore my roommate to amuse myself. Yes right I am 24 years old and have a male roommate. He has been my roommate for the entire 24 years of my life. This roommate shares my physical body with me while he has his own meta-physical self.

Now back to the topic. To entertain ourselves, my friend and I start discussing on an intellectual debate; do we need a MBA degree behind our names to establish ourselves as successful people in the world. The MBA degree is a step in the ladder that will help us become great business men but is not the ladder itself. It is always possible to skip a step in the ladder to climb two at a time. We start debating on this and come up with the idea to skip this major step. It is to find something you are really interested in. Find that and you are the king of the world. Bill Gates fond his in Programming and Steve Jobs found his in calligraphy that helped him make the Macintosh a really adorable OS. But even these great personalities have differences; Bill Gates found his aspiration at the age of 20 whereas Steve Jobs found his only at 24. When such people have such differences what are we?

We still have a hell lot of time to come up with our aspirations. It may take us time finding it. But once we find it there must be no delay in chasing it. That is what makes people great people.
